Stainless steel countertops usually bring to mind an image of a hospital, emergency room or some type of clinical setting. However, nearly all restaurants kitchens have stainless countertops installed everywhere you look. Never the less, most people who are building new homes or doing a little kitchen remodeling are not immediately drawn to stainless kitchen countertops.
Stainless kitchen countertops are in the price range of about $100 to $200 per square foot. Stainless on its own does not rust, corrode or stain as easily as commonplace steel does. Stainless, even though it seems to contradict its name, is only stain resistant not completely staining proof. Acidic foods and chlorine bleaches will stain or corrode stainless unless it is quickly and thoroughly rinsed off. Stainless steel kitchen countertops are durable and long lasting, but, over time they will age. Because stainless steel is a softer metal, just with ordinary use your stainless countertop can become scratched or dented. Deep indentations or scratches may be difficult or completely impossible to remove. And, let us not mention the abundance of fingerprints that easily collect on stainless steel kitchen countertops; especially if children are present.
However, on the other hand, stainless countertops will never support the growth of bacteria or mold of any kind. Simply wash it with warm water and soap. Hot pans or casseroles, fresh from the oven, will not damage it. Stainless steel is available in a shiny surface or a brushed surface texture. The brushed finish will almost totally eliminate unwanted fingerprints. Maybe most importantly, stainless will compliment any other color that you may choose to dress your kitchen in; your imagination is the only thing that can limit you.
So, as in most cases, the choice is yours; stainless steel, granite, ceramic tile, plastic laminate, natural stone, butcher block and etc. Only you can decide which one will fit into your life the best.
